Scientific Rigor

We publish in peer-reviewed journals and contribute to leading scholarship in the field of social-emotional learning, supporting researchers and policymakers with evidence and insights.

The Compound Competency Inventory for the 21st Century (CCI-21) was developed by expert psychometricians and developmental psychologists to measure Character, Skills, & Meta-Learning. We believe and act on recognizing the agency of learners through self-assessment. At BE, we have a mission-driven vision to transform education using 12 Competencies and 60 Sub-Competencies, and seek to contribute to scientific advancement through rigorous peer-reviewed publications (see the journal articles below). With over 300K students, and ongoing advances, BE continues to strengthen our evidence base as we connect with new and diverse partners.

These 3 dimensions complement the 4th Dimension, which is typically the only dimension taught in education: Knowledge.

Our competency framework is based on the Center for Curriculum Redesign’s 4D Model, and our methodology has been published through 4 scientific research papers in independent journals. Our methods demonstrate strong performance across three core psychometric properties, ensuring robustness, validity, and the highest standards of scientific rigor:

Sensitive

It can pick up on differences between people being assessed, even when they’re in the same context.

Reliable

It’s like a quality mirror: if you haven’t changed, your reflection shouldn’t change either!

Valid

Each question in the survey was carefully designed to connect with the competencies & sub-competencies we want to measure.

The CCI-21 is aligned with global frameworks, including OECD Learning Compass, IB, & UNESCO. More importantly, we connect our framework to local school frameworks to make meaning and support transformation in a relevant and actionable way for our partners.
